Principal Deputy Director Organization

The Office of the Principal Deputy Director provides high level management direction and oversight of the Office of Science, including ensuring the Office of Science research and facility portfolio is strategically conceived and integrated across SC, DOE, and other Federal agencies, and establishes organizational policies for program effectiveness, and program and project viability.

The following offices provide leadership and coordination on R&D and organizational management initiatives important to the Office of Science and the Department:

- Office of Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Programs - The Office of Science manages these programs for the entire Department
- The Office of Accelerator R&D and Production
- The Office of Isotope R&D and Production

Office of Strategic Planning & Interagency Coordination
Office of International Science & Technology Cooperation and Trusted Research

The Office of the Principal Deputy Director also includes the following organizations:

The Office of Budget manages the budget formulation and execution processes on behalf of the Director and the Office of Science’s Senior Manager and ensures that financial management is applied using proper accounting controls and principles.

The Office of Management supports planning and administration of organizational resources and staffing across the Office of Science.

The Office of Project Assessment provides independent advice to the SC leadership regarding those activities essential to constructing and operating major research facilities.

The Office of Communications and Public Affairs supports the mission of the Office of Science by communicating the activities and successes of the Office of Science to the public.
The Office of Scientific and Technical Information develops and maintains efficient, state-of-the-art tools for access and delivery of research results from the entire Department of Energy.
The Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Students sponsors programs helping develop the next generation of scientists and engineers to support the DOE mission, administer programs, and conduct research.
The Office of Grants and Contract Support manages and executes the financial actions that deliver funds to the field, and is the acquisition, financial assistance, and contract management advisor to the Director and Deputy Director for Science Programs.

Field Operations Organization

The Field Operations organization includes the following offices:

The Office of Field Safety, Security and Infrastructure supports the Science mission by providing expertise in support of laboratory operations, effective operational policy integration, and program management for the Infrastructure, Security, and Sustainability programs at Science laboratories. The Office manages the SC Science Laboratories Infrastructure program and projects, the SC Safeguards and Security program and projects, and represents SC in corporate policy deliberations related to facilities management and SC sustainability efforts.

The Office of Laboratory Policy supports the Science (SC) mission by facilitating the competition and performance evaluation of the SC laboratories’ management and operating contracts, and manages the SC laboratory directed research and development and work for others programs.

The Office of Information Management includes the Cybersecurity Division and the IT Services Division. This office oversees the cybersecurity actions to support the Office of Science missions and programs, as well as providing guidance to the SC National Laboratories. This office also provides information technology and information management services to the entire Office of Science.

Site Offices

The Office of Science is accountable for the effective stewardship and management of ten world class laboratories, and employs a performance based management and operating contract model to achieve these objectives. Each Office of Science Site Office oversees the operation of their respective laboratory:

Consolidated Service Center

The Office of Science Consolidated Service Center is a virtual organization comprised of the combined support capabilities of the Chicago Office (CH) and Oak Ridge Office (OR), providing essential administrative, business, and technical services in support of the entire federal Office of Science complex.
